“Mera Magiou Mou Misepses” (A May Day You Left Me) … Poet Yannis Ristos was inspired to write “Epitaphios” from which this poem about the struggles of the people and of loss. This specific poem, set to the music of Mikis Theodorakis, is set in May 1936, in Thessaloniki during a smoke workers’ demonstration, where a young man is shot to death. Upon seeing the lad’s mother in tears with her hands in the air, Ritsos penned the poignant verse. Despite the mournful music, the song is about the power of the people to bring about change.
